In the second event of the Young Fabian Defence and Security Review, we meet with Lord Alan West of Spithead to discuss:
'The Threats to Britain’s Security',
Lord West will speak for approximately 30 minutes introducing the topic, followed by Q&A, before we break into structured group discussion. We will look specifically at:
- What are the key security challenges facing the UK?
- What are the more fundamental, long-term threats to our common security, what or who is driving them?
- How can we improve our ability to identify, predict and act upon underlying threats to Britain’s security, and work to prevent them developing?
Prior to retirement, Lord West enjoyed a distinguished career in both politics and the Royal Navy, serving from 2002-2006 as First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff, and subsequently as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the British Home Office with responsibility for security and a security advisor to Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Previous to that, Lord West spent three years as head of naval intelligence, rewriting the NATO intelligence manual after the collapse of the Soviet Union, subsequently producing a Seaford House Paper on the UK's need for a ‘Grand Strategy’.
