Our lives are underpinned by local public services: from affordable housing and schools, to public health and social care. Austerity is putting these at risk. Despite growing demand for these services, councils' budgets have been slashed over the past 8 years, driving many into financial crisis.
We need to raise the alarm about the crisis of local austerity, predict the impact of recent fiscal changes, and share the work of councils who are innovating under fire to keep services running. That's why the Young Fabian Economy & Finance and Devolution & Local Government networks are launching a report to do exactly that - and to explore ideas that Labour could use to end austerity in our local services.
In this report launch, we will hear from Mark Whittaker (YF Economy & Finance Network), Marian Craig (YF Devolution & Local Government Network), Adam Allnutt (YF Local Government Liaison), Cllr Michael Payne (Deputy Leader of the LGA Labour Group), Cllr Clare Coghill (Leader of Waltham Forest Council), Cllr Steve Battlemuch, Chair of Robin Hood Energy, and Cllr Mili Patel Lead Member for Children's Safeguarding, Early Help & Social Care, Brent Council).
