Environmentalism, Community Organising and One Nation
21st June 2014 11:00 - 1:00pm | Transport House, 1 Cathedral Road, Cardiff CF11 9SD
This is an event for the environmentalism project, part of the Young Fabian One Nation Ideas Series.
Key speakers: Mark Drakeford AM, and John Hallett, Cluster Manager, Cardiff West Communities First
The project objectives are to:
- Explore the potential overlap between local community initiatives associated with environmental movements.
- Discuss the potential benefits of utilising these initiatives.
- Analyse these initiatives and their theoretical base in relation to the key principles and suggested aims of one nation ideas outlined by Ed Miliband and in the collection of essays in One Nation power, hope, community.
At this meeting, the focus will be upon community organising, a key part of Labour’s One Nation idea. But how can this be established within the notion of environmentalism? The session will involve contributions from Professor Mark Drakeford, previously of Cardiff University, now AM for Cardiff West, and John Hallett a local organiser for the Communities First project, which operates an environment-focused "time bank" initiative. Their contributions will consider how to engage people in local environmental and community engagement activities as part of the One Nation idea. Additionally, the discussion will reflect upon how we can foster a link between local and international activity to tackle climate change.
Part of the meeting will also introduce members to Ideas Wales, a Labour friendly think tank based in Wales hoping to involve young members in writing short publications on a diverse range of policy issues for consideration by the Welsh Labour Party.
