Come join the Communications Network for our Steering Meeting at 6.30pm on the 25 June where we'll be deciding our agenda for the next quarter!

For those who are new to the network or more widely to the Young Fabians, the Communications Network is a hub for all Young Fabians working or interested in journalism, PR and any other related media or communications professions. It's also a group for people to discuss and debate the future of an increasingly dynamic diverse industry – and also meet like-minded people from across the society.

Over the last quarter we have collaborated with other networks, hosting events ranging from: tackling the fake news "infodemic" surrounding the pandemic and how journalists can overcome some of the challenges presented by social distancing, to how the Labour can better communicate and win back the public's trust.

While coronavirus continues to bite, it's clear that its indirect effects are tearing apart what was already a very fragile social fabric - whether here in the UK or in the US. While exposing the structural inequalities causing higher Covid death rates among BAME communities in the UK, lockdown measures have also exacerbated already wide socioeconomic inequalities and driven Black Lives Matter protests the world over.

We will look, over the next quarter, at these shifting tectonic plates and how well or how poorly the media and wider communications industry is communicating about race and inequality. We will look internally at the media industry - a sector continuously fails both staff among its ranks and platform black and wider BAME voices - to look at how it can reform itself to better report on race.

Elsewhere we plan to look at how organisations, such as PressPad, are continuing to remotely support young working class journalists forge a career in the sector and the practical steps that they can take under lockdown. At all times, the Communications Network aims to be a resource for young comms sector specialists and journalists working in/trying to break into the sector.

Otherwise, beyond these two events, the meeting will be a chance to hear from members on what issues the network should look at over the next few months.
