On Thursday 19th March the Young Fabians hosted an event entitled “The First 100 Days: What’s the Big Idea?"

Chaired by Giles Fraser the event looked at some of the big ideas on the table ahead of the General Election and explored what priorities the next Government should have.

The event kicked off with a rousing set of opening remarks from Baroness Jan Royall who reminded us that unfortunately young people are being prevented from reaching their aspirations and that the real way to make change in this country is to use your vote on 7th May.

The event then featured pitches from Jenny Ricks, Chair of the Tax Dodging Bill Campaign calling for the introduction of a comprehensive bill designed to tackle corporate tax avoidance and to use any revenue raised for anti-poverty measures in the UK; Oliver Sidorczuk from Bite the Ballot calling for a National Voter Registration Bill; and Jack Falkingham from Labour Campaign for Mental Health calling for a culture change in the way mental health is viewed and its mainstreaming across all areas of policy.

As always at Young Fabians events the debate was enlivened by challenging and insightful questions from the members in attendance. Questions about the morality of tax avoidance, whether we should have compulsory voting and the impact of changes on teachers and other civil servants were a few of the many interesting areas that were covered.

The discussion didn’t end with the event…Last week we ran a #first100days blog series to highlight the work our Young Fabians networks and what the next Government’s priorities should be from a more forensic industry and sector perspective.
