Environmentalism and One Nation: State responses to sustainable economic and social life

26 June 2014, 5.30-7.00pm | Fabian Society, 61 Petty France, London SW1H 9EU
Speaker: Julia Slay, Senior Researcher and Social Policy Programme Co-ordinator, New Economics Foundation

The project objectives are to:

  1. Explore the potential overlap between local community initiatives associated with environmental movements.
  2. Discuss the potential benefits of utilising these initiatives.
  3. Analyse these initiatives and their theoretical base in relation to the key principles and suggested aims of one nation ideas outlined by Ed Miliband and in the collection of essays in One Nation power, hope, community

This meeting will focus upon the combination of economic and environmental challenges we face today and the role of the state in developing effective policy responses which support and protect the environment whilst empowering citizens and communities. The focus of this final meeting therefore seeks to link together the wider issues of Environmental Justice and Equality discussed in the first meeting and local community organising and empowerment in the second. It allows for an explicit consideration of what role the state will play in the transition towards sustainable economic and social life.
