The Young Fabian International Network is delighted to invite you to a roundtable event on the aftermath of the Federal Election in Germany.
It is already two months ago that Germany went to the ballot box and Angela Merkel, leader of the CDU, is still looking for coalition partners together with the sister party CSU. The external pressure is increasing, especially after the unsuccessful talks with the Liberal party FDP and the Green party Die Grünen. Martin Schulz, leader of the SPD, has been quick to announce after the election that the SPD´s place is on the opposition bench. Given the new realities the SPD has to reconsider whether it really wants to put the party over the country. In any case it is likely that Germany will see something that never happened before: a minority government or re-election.
But not only the electorate is becoming increasingly inpatient. Also international partners want to know what to expect in a country that is considered to have strong influence within the European Union. Emmanuel Macron has been calling for a German partner to reform the European Union - so far without response from Berlin. London is hoping for a stable partner for the Brexit-negotiations which is not only occupied with domestic issues. But if the current talks fail again, new elections could delay the process easily until spring 2018.
Join us for an informal debate on the current political situation with Florian Ranft, Senior Policy Researcher at Policy Network and close follower of German politics to discuss those issues.
The roundtable event will take place on Thursday, 14th December, 19 - 20.30 at Fabian Headquarter (61 Petty France, Westminster, London SW1H 9EU, UK).
We are looking forward to seeing you there!
