Event exploring the challenge that arises for Labour when local voters return politicians of different parties to parliament and local councils, in the 'red wall' and beyond. Speakers;
  • Cllr Judi Billing, Executive Member for Community Engagement for North Hertfordshire District Council
  • Cllr Eamonn O'Brien, Leader of Bury Council
  • Peter Robbins, Head of the LGA Labour Group
  • Cllr Sharon Taylor, Leader of Stevenage Council

Constituency MPs and local authorities might work together to resolve constituent issues and lobby central government, but can also clash, and the greatest tension can come when local voters have decided to return politicians of different parties to these offices. The election of a new wave of ‘Red Wall’ Tory MPs in Northern and Midlands seats that often still have Labour councils has brought this into focus, but this has been the case for longer in some boroughs in southern England. This event aims to look at these dynamics in different parts of the country, and see what Labour can learn from their experiences.
