| Policy News August 2008 - September 2008 |
|
This newsletter appears every two months and brings together policy news from think tanks, third sector organisations and Whitehall departments, including an outline of the best in recent policy publications. You can read the reports in full online by following the web address listed at the end of each summary.
Over August and September, while ministers and MPs were taking advantage of Recess for some rest and recuperation, policy wonks in Westminster and beyond were as busy as ever. Highlights of the past two months include a report on disability in the UK from DWP, coinciding with Britain’s tremendous medal haul at the Paralympics. With the credit crunch occupying every headline, inevitably the economy loomed large. A report from KPMG confirms the gloom about a weakening labour market at the same time as Global Insight and Chatham House were releasing papers discussing a world of oil at $200+ a barrel. Timely reports from the GLA and IFS look at issues of poverty for two particularly vulnerable groups - those working on minimum wage in the capital and older people. And in a new feature of the newsletter, ‘Conservative Corner’, Social Market Foundation explores the beliefs and policies of the next-generation Tory.
