Can a win in France spark a revival for the left in Europe? |
 Tuesday 7 February 2012, 6:30pm
Thatcher Room, Portcullis House, SW1, LondonCan the French Socialists win in the French Presidential election next May? And can a win for the French Socialists spark a revival of the left in Europe? Panellists: • Olaf Cramme – Director of Policy Network and a Visiting Fellow at the European Institute at the London School of Economics • Axelle Lemaire – Parti Socialiste candidate in the Northern Europe constituency for the 2012 French legislative elections • Emma Reynolds – Member of Parliament for Wolverhampton North East and Shadow Minister for Europe • David Schoibl – Chair of the Labour Movement for Europe Chair: Jack Storry – International Officer, Young Fabians
Of the 27 states that comprise the European Union just 5 have centre-left governments. Governments of the right currently govern 95% of the population of the European Union. It is no exaggeration to say the left across Europe is in crisis.
However, this May Francois Hollande’s Socialists in France have the chance to reverse that trend by seizing control of the second most populous state in Europe. Our panel will assess his chances of doing that and tackle the question of whether a win in France for the left can spark off a revival of the left across Europe.
