Adrian Prandle
Chair
Adrian is proud to have been elected by colleagues as Young Fabian Chair for 2010/11 having come top of the all-member postal ballot for the third year in succession. He also sits on the Fabian Society Executive Committee.
Adrian chairs Young Fabian events and executive committee meetings as well as leading strategic planning and decision-making for the organisation. He has set out his priorities for this year’s executive committee as:
- Increasing membership - Increasing member involvement - Increasing YF funds - Increasing influence He previously served as Vice Chair with responsibility for the Young Fabians’ policy development. The major part of this role was devising and coordinating the YF Policy Development Groups, which members across the country signed up to in their hundreds. This work culminated in the publication of The New Generation - the Young Fabians 50th anniversary pamphlet, which Adrian edited.
In his first year on the Young Fabian Executive - as Officer Without Portfolio – Adrian organised and led the Young Fabian/Labour Staff Network delegation to Barack Obama’s campaign in the swing state of Ohio. 80 members joined that trip - amongst the most ambitious of Young Fabian activity in memory, and believed to be the largest delegation from the UK to Obama’s campaign. He followed this up, as YF International Officer, coordinating work to capitalise on the experience the group had and ensure that the ideas and enthusiasm from that successful campaign are brought into progressive campaigning across the UK. This included the publication of three online pamphlets, offering inspiration and ideas for the Labour movement in this country.
Adrian, 28, is a former adviser to Rt Hon Liam Byrne MP and currently works at an education trade union following a stint with a large international NGO. His time spent living abroad in Hong Kong and the USA as well as being lucky enough to represent the Young Fabians on ACTSA’s youth delegation to southern Africa, has given Adrian a thirst for international campaigning and he has assisted in various campaigns for the democratic left in America, Sweden and Australia as well a being an active member of ACTSA. He continues to campaign in the UK and is a member of GMB and Cities of London and Westminster CLP.
Adrian believes the Young Fabians should aim to show the strength of young people on the left and through this be in a position to influence. He thinks this can be done intellectually and through demonstrating hard work in campaigning and by developing our wider networks. He has a track record of securing funding for the Young Fabians, raising thousands in sponsorship for YF pamphlets and events. Adrian put together the 2010 members survey to give members the chance to guide the executive committee’s planning and has constantly delivered for members. As well as editing The New Generation pamphlet, he has organised social, political, policy, campaigning, and Embassy events and sought to advance the Young Fabians’ organisational relationships inside and outside the Labour movement. He chaired the online Labour leadership webchat with Rt Hon Andy Burnham MP, headed up the team that organised the Young Fabian Summer School in Leeds in 2009, and has written regularly for Anticipations and the Young Fabian blog.
