Brian Duggan
Special Project Officer
This year we are likely to see 1 million young people out of work and this is the focus of my work for the Young Fabians. These challenges speak directly to our concerns and to our members, the challenges of getting on in an economy that is holding people back, and a government that is letting down its next generation. I hope to run a national campaign for the Young Fabians raising awareness of youth unemployment, its consequences and discover some potential actions which the government should take to stem the damage which youth unemployment has on the lives of young people, our economy and wider society. During the course of the year I hope to: 1. Run a flagship series of events around the country for our members discussing youth unemployment in particular areas and bring together Young Fabians, local young people, local politicians, activists and experts to debate the issues. 2. Publish the findings of this work in a way that influences and shapes the political and policy debate around youth unemployment and its consequences. 3. Use the findings to shape the response of the Labour Party to youth unemployment and as part of a campaign to focus a national debate on youth unemployment.
I grew up in Derry in Northern Ireland and this is my third year on the Young Fabian Executive having served as International Officer and Policy Officer, including editing last year's flagship pamphlet, "Ambition's for Britain's Future" (insert link). I studied at the Universities of Warwick and the LSE and work for the European Parliamentary Labour Party. Aside from my work with the Young Fabians, I am also a member of the Labour Movement for Europe National Executive Committee and am Vice Chair of the Labour Party Irish Society.
