Today, dietary patterns are less likely to be shaped by nutrition recommendations than by the supply and marketing of food by multinational food companies and food retailers. Having a lower socioeconomic position is associated with generally consuming more energy dense nutrient poor foods and beverages, and a greater prevalence of overweight/obesity and other nutrition-related chronic diseases. By 2030, it is estimated there will be approximately 8.5 million incident cases of diabetes mellitus, 7.3 million incident cases of cardiovascular disease and more than half a million new cancer cases; with treatment costs approximately £2 billion per year.

The Next Generation: What should today’s young people want from a fairer capitalism?

Saturday 14th January, 2pm
Institute of Education, 20 Bedford Way, London, WC1H 0AL

In the midst of economic downturn and a fiscal contraction, this year the Young Fabians are unsurprisingly focusing a lot of energy on the policy issues around the ‘squeezed youth’. This event will kick-start that debate, looking at what needs to be done to create a fairer capitalism. We have a fantastic panel lined up to lead this discussion which will touch upon:

· How to provide serious solutions to youth unemployment, rather than just intervening at the margins.

· Intergenerational fairness and how can Labour ensure that the next generation obtains at least parity in the standard of living with preceding generations.

· What can be done to address growing inequality in terms of both wages and opportunities, the barriers to addressing it and where such inequality ends if not enough is done to prevent its continued growth.

Gordon Marsden MP will also be making a major policy announcement on apprenticeships and Professor Mariana Mazzucato will be arguing that if countries want more Googles, they need more not less State.

Young Fabian Annual Report 2010/11
ar1011sm.pngGuided by four strategic priorities, last year was hugely successful for the organisation and the report outlines high levels of member activism across the UK, a wide variety of activities provided for members, and detailed policy development and debate across high quality printed publications and the YF Blog.

As thinkers and doers, the Young Fabians remains the ‘go to’ youth movement on the left for policy discussion and international activities.

YF Social at New Year Conference
ioebar.jpg

Saturday 14th January, 5.30pm
IOE bar, Institute of Education, 20 Bedford Way, London WC1H 0AL

Once this year's Fabian conference is over we will be having our traditional social in the IOE bar. This is located downstairs from where the conference will be held (just ask a member of staff if you cant find it).

We'll try and occupy the area around the table football but if we can't get this area, we'll gather in another obvious location.

The conference social is a great opportunity to socialise and network and is normally a lot of fun. The beer is relatively cheap and we'll be having a few games of table football for anyone who's interested.

Please join us!

This past summer, several London boroughs experienced looting, arson and riots that lasted over several days and spread to other parts of the country. It did not take long before politicians from all sides of the spectrum quickly appeared on television and radio to provide their own insight into solutions and reasons behind such violent behavior. Arguments covered all aspects from the spending cuts, the policing, and even the level of punishments.

Young Fabian Co-options 2011
yfsquare.png
Sunday 20th November - 12 noon
Cole Room, 11 Dartmouth Street, London, SW1A 9BN

Each year, the elected executive can add up to five additional members to our hardworking team of volunteers through co-option.

This year the following positions haven’t been filled by the executive:
· Fundraising Officer
· Social Officer
· Networks Officer
· Antics Deputy Editor
· Equalities Officer

You may want to pitch something completely different. We welcome new ideas – so you should not feel limited by this list.

Once co-opted, you'll need to attend Executive committee meetings. In 2011/12, committee meetings will take place in London at the start of every month. We have several exec members outside of London who phone in and we pay expenses for those who want to travel to London for meetings. The Chair will work with you to develop your exact responsibilities and the committee will help you achieve all you set out to do.

Please contact the Chair This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it for more details or read over the FAQS here.
