Young Fabians Executive 2013-Present: Campaigns Officer, Executive Officer
In 2013 I had a fantastic experience chairing the Young Fabians' policy commission on youth unemployment. The commission's report was led by a group of Young Fabians and launched by the Shadow Secretary for Employment, Stephen Timms MP, and since the policy recommendations were published the Labour Party have called for improved routes into vocational work and the current government have made coding part of the school curricula following our call to update what is taught in schools to match the needs of a changing labour market. The Young Fabians has a strong research and policy voice and once the policy commission was completed I was keen to stay involved.
Now as campaigns officer I have set out to work with members across the country to build a culture of campaigning in the Young Fabians. No doubt, members are already campaigning - the challenge is to organise campaigning sessions and training to support members. 2014 is an important electoral year with the local and European Parliament elections and the Scottish Referendum. We need to organise now to set the foundations for us to be out campaigning in the lead up to the General Election in 2015 and the Mayoral Election in 2016.
This is no easy task, and we must be realistic about our ambitions but ambitious nonetheless. Like the policy commission, I seek to ensure that community organising principles of member leadership and development are at the heart of our campaigning. I look forward to working with you all.
